Cryptomat is one such site where in you can encrypt your messages for free online by just using your browser.  The site uses industry standard AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) algorithm.  Moreover, the encryption takes places within the browser strictly and hence no data is send to the internet or to their servers.

You need to enter your message and encrypt with using a password of more than 8 characters long.  You can send the encrypted message to your friend and he/she can go to the site and paste the message you have send, in the box, enter the password and click decrypt.
