Modify Add/Remove list : Windows 7 & Windows XP

on Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Add/Remove list becomes bigger when you install more programs.  It is possible to remove programs which are not required to be displayed in the Add/Remove list (The removed list can be restored later).  This gives you an option to hide programs which you wish not to appear in the list or which you do not wish to be uninstalled.

This can be a key logger or a screen capture program that you have installed to keep a check on your child.  And you dont want him to go to the Add Remove Programs and uninstall it.

This is how we do it.

1.   Open Run Dialog box by Start ->Run or you can press the combination of Windows key + R.

2.   Open Registry Editor by typing "regedit" (without quotes") in the Run Dialog box.

3.   Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Uninstall

4.   In the left pane, you can find the list of programs installed in your computer.  While majority of them are displayed by their name, some are displayed by random numbers and letters.  Searching the right pane can show you their display name.

5.   Find the program which you want to hide from the list.

6.   Back up the list so that you can restore it later, when you require to see the full list.  To export the key, select the corresponding key in the left hand pane and Go to file and then click Export.  Save the file with a meaningful name and with the extension of .reg.

7.   Now go back to the Registry Editor and delete the key which you require to be removed.  This can be either done by selecting the key and pressing Delete key or by selecting the key, right clicking it and selecting Delete.

8.  Now when you want to restore the settings, double click the reg file which you saved and the list is as before.

Before manipulating Registry, it is always good to back up the entire registry.  It is because if Registry gets corrupted, the Windows OS will crash
